How do we get a 'gut' feeling - understanding the gut-brain connection

The human microbiom project is certainly having an impact. People are really getting into this shit (pun intended) and I am no exception.

It’s facinating to consider that trillions of little organisms in our bowel could control how we feel and even underlay mental illness.

I can see how this might occur on a basic level, with the raw materials for neurotransmitters coming from the food we eat, However the microbiome - mood connection (as I shalll call it) suggests that what we eat feeds our bowel bacteria which then influences our mental state and more, that these little mites drive us to do do things, crave foods and behave in ways litterally beyond our control! I have no idea as yet how this occurs, but I have been looking into the connection between the gut and brain and how significant it is in driving our emotional responses.
