Ketamine Assisted Psychotherapy
Ketamine-Assisted Psychotherapy (KAP) is an emerging treatment modality that combines the use of ketamine with psychotherapeutic practices to address conditions such as pain, anxiety, and depression. KAP is a down the track option for treatment resistant depression, and pervasive PTSD
In Australia the Ketamine is an oral administration prescribed by a psychiatrist. 2-3 times a week starting with 4 weeks and up to 6 months treatment may be required. When coupled with intense psychotherapy that focuses on uncovering the trauma and meanings made from it the treatment may be accelerated. For treatment resistant depression without known or suspected trauma underpinning it, KAP is leveraged for its ability to lift the mood and thoughts away from recursive negativity and capitalise on the neuroplastic effects of the shift in mood that lasts for a few days following the dose.
Research Findings While the field of KAP research is still blossoming, early studies have shown encouraging results. Initial findings suggest that KAP can lead to lasting reductions in pain, anxiety, and depressive symptoms. Moreover, studies hint that engaging in longer-term psychotherapy could help maintain these positive changes. For instance, a study by Drozdz et al. (2022) highlighted the promising outcomes of KAP treatments.
Psychoanalytic Framework In a groundbreaking study conducted by Dore et al. (2019), the efficacy of KAP within a psychoanalytic framework was explored. The study, which involved 235 patients across diverse diagnostic categories, revealed significant reductions in anxiety and depression compared to baseline. Furthermore, it underscored a positive link between the number of KAP sessions and improvements in mental well-being
GP referral required for the psychiatrists appointments which are external to the practice. Integration psychotherapy sessions are additional.
