What is the difference between Psychotherapy and Psychology?
Psychologists are primarily trained in Focusued Psychological Therapies that qualify for medicare rebates. CBT; Cognitive (thought) Behaviour Therapy aims to resolve emotional issues and mood disorders by challenging thoughts that perpetuate poor mood states and also modify behaviour to support change. Psychologists might also use Interpersonal therapy which includes seeing how the individual manages their relationships with others.
Psychotherapy delves deeper seeking to understand how and why you might have mood issues. Psychotherapy might focus on your personality style, attitudes, underlying beliefs and how your past conditioning has shaped you. Psychotherapy helps you to better understand yourself, your moods, and the patterns that continue to block you from growth and contentment.
Ultimately therapy helps you to become more authentic and this improves your capacity to have meaningful relationships and a better quality of life overall.
